Hi I am new. Thanks for the food at the proper time.
by 2+2=5 ini have been lurking on this forum for a few months and thought it was time i joined in.
a big thankyou goes to all who post here, i have enjoyed immensely all the thought provoking discussion and not so thought provoking (thanks recovery/ethos).
i have had heaps to get my head around recently learning the truth about the truth and as i remember reading here before its like digesting a brick.

most boring television ever
by Hortensia inmy vote is for the lord of the rings, all three of them.
or pretty much any star trek movie.
i tried watching the lor movies today, but my god, it's just battle after battle after battle and frodo, cute guy though he is, wimping out all over the place and having to be carried by everyone.. dull... i have never succeeded in watching those damn movies from beginning to end..

Since all I ever gave to the LOTR series was a few minutes of my time while desperately wanting to go to sleep anyway, I'm going to check the first book in the triology out from the library and give it a go.
Perhaps it will turn out to be one of those "loved the book, didn't care for the move" experiences. (Think "Dune" by Frank Herbert.)

My kids, who were pre-teen at the time, were dying to see one of the LOTR movies several years ago. A few local JWs had seen it and were raving about it, but quietly for fear of being branded as "weak" or "bad association".
Anyway, the kids weren't letting their request die, so as a dutiful Elder Dad, I decided to go preview the thing myself on a work night and decide whether it was too worldly/demonized/violent, etc for them to see.
I sat down in the chair. My eyelids were shut within 5 minutes. 10 minutes later there's shrieking music and some critter is fighting for its life and I sit bolt upright almost going into cardiac arrest. 2 minutes later I'm sound asleep. 10 minutes later there's shrieking music and some critter is fighting for its life and I sit bolt upright almost going into cardiac arrest. ....lather, rinse, repeat for the duration of the movie.
I think I told my kids it was too violent since that's ALL I saw in the movie. Poor kids. I guess.

At first read of this thread I was more supportive of cedars position and opposed to scotoma's until I took the time to actually LOOK at the JW.org website news section. As you would expect, it's not a "News Website" like MSN, CNN, BBC, etc. You would only go to JW.org if you've got an interest in JWs. So they have a "News" section where ALL the stories have some JW connection. Is that really so bad or unusual?
Having only been faded for a couple years now, I'm still trying to calibrate my own sense of "normal". So, just out of curiosity, I randomly picked a generic, mainstream, American branch of a Christian church and googled it. My first pick was the Lutherans and here's what I found front and center:

The extra connection that fellow church members have for each other is not too surprising.
So Church X's website's "News" section only features news items if they have a connection to Church X. The JWs aren't that strange in this regard, IMO. I think that portion of the WT criticism found in this thead is a bit over the top and I'm certainly no fanboy of the WT.
I totally agree that the comfort and support being offered by the JWs ultimately is offered with the goal of converting new recruits.

Anyone else like to sew??? What kind of Machine do you use???
by ohiocowboy ini'm ready to get my sewing machines out of hiding, and will be sewing once again this winter.
i'd like to start quilting again, as it is fun to do, eases stress, and is healthier than just sitting in front of the tv.
i have even designed a few items of clothing in the past that i have sold, although i am by no means another madeleine vionet or issey miyake-lol.. i've always liked sewing machines even as a child (much to the dismay of my parents-lol), and there are a couple favorites that i have had for many years.

Hey there OC,
I'm not a sewing guy for two reasons:
1. Minimus might shun me.
2. Been too busy making a living, being a JW and raising kids.
I actually sent off for a kit for a backpacking quilt from Ray Jardine but never got around to actually making it. Maybe when the kids have flown the coop I'll do it.
In the meantime, here's an essay written by Ray Jardine that I think you might enjoy. He's kind of the Grand Daddy of ultra light backpacking. Sorry I can't post the content directly. He's got his website set up to prevent cut & paste.

it's nice to finally be able to say hello to you all, having been a long time reader of the forum.. i put off signing up as i didn't feel i had much to contribute, but if i'm honest, seeing atlantis' post about confidential information pushed me into it.. i hope i can get round to writing my story - i always enjoy reading others and it never ceases to amaze me how many have had similar experiences.. so there goes my first post!.
